Valmong

In front of Camilla, Nevari comes into the light, eyes widening at the sight of us. She immediately puts her hands up, a pair of knives dangling from her thumbs. Above us, the floorboards creak, and shadows shift with frantic urgency. Moving in complete silence, I press us against the wall, trying to get a glimpse of what’s happening while keeping Nevari in my peripheral vision. She copies my movement, pressing herself against the opposite wall.

Whoever they are, they’re trashing the room. Beside me, it seems like Camilla is holding her breath.

“Is this all that’s here?” One of them tries the locked door. When it doesn’t open, they place their palm against it and it explodes, splinters littering the room. “Shit. Dead end.”

“There must be another way out — they didn’t just disappear.” Another grabs a bookshelf, toppling it in search of a door. “Probably found the brat, too. Keep looking.”

“We were followed.” Camilla’s voice is barely a whisper, and her hands grip my arm. “Why didn’t Tenebrin warn us?”

Good question.

I’m not any more omniscient than my sister, you know.

It’s only a matter of time before they find us. We’ll lose what little advantage we have if they do. Camilla’s worried eyes meet mine. I lean in close, mouth by her ear.

“On my signal. Paralysis.” I’m not sure what possesses me to do it, but when I pull back, I tuck a strand of her hair behind her ear, the urge to touch her overwhelming.

She nods, and even in the dark I see the faint pink in her cheeks. For a moment, her eyes dart to my mouth.

Not the time or place, Valmong.

I let the shadows take me, disappearing before I succumb to a lack of self-control and kiss her.
